Steer-by-Wire is an innovative steering technology that replaces traditional mechanical connections with electronic signal transmission. Compared with conventional steering systems, it offers greater flexibility, a lighter design, higher efficiency, and enhanced safety, making it one of the core technologies for intelligent driving and new energy vehicles.
Steer-by-Wire for Smarter NEVs and Autonomy
XEPS’s Steer-by-Wire system is engineered as a foundational technology for new energy vehicles (NEVs) and autonomous platforms (L2–L4). By removing the mechanical constraints of traditional steering systems, it opens new possibilities for:
Interior space optimization
Modular vehicle design
Personalized driving dynamics
Seamless integration with ADAS and self-driving stacks
Key Component:
Steering Wheel Actuator (Steering Feedback Actuator)
Function: Simulating Road Feel
In a steering system with no mechanical link, there is no physical force between the steering wheel and the wheels. The steering wheel actuator uses an electric motor and controller to apply appropriate force and torque to the steering wheel, accurately simulating the road feel and steering feedback. This allows the driver to experience a natural, realistic, and precise steering sensation, even in a fully electronically controlled steering system.
Steering Gear Actuator (Steering Rack Actuator)
Function: Execute Steering
Installed on the wheel side, this module feeds back the measured front‑wheel angle to the main controller and receives its commands to control the steering mechanism. It adjusts the front‑wheel angle as required, precisely executing the driver’s steering input.
Our Steer-by-Wire product features:
1.Basic manual steering force and steering functions
2.Road feel simulation and feedback
3.Soft stop simulation and protection
4.Power assist and response control
Technical advantages:
1.Faster response with only 20ms delay, significantly improving transmission efficiency
2.Flexible handling, supporting ±240° steering wheel angle settings, allowing a full turn with just 0.66 rotations
3.Decoupling of the steering wheel and steering gear, offering multiple road feel modes for the driver
4.Safety redundancy with multiple backup systems to prevent single-point failures.
Benefits for Drivers:
1.Customizable Driving Experience: Different driving modes (Sport, Comfort, Off-road) can be adjusted through software calibration without changing hardware.
2.Significantly Reduced Driver Fatigue: Precise control and power assist make long-distance and low-speed driving easier and less tiring.
3.Enhanced Safety: Integration with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving controls improves driving safety and handling stability.
Benefits for OEMs:
1.Applicble to a wide range of vehicles, including passenger cars, commercial vehicles, new energy vehicles, light trucks, and SUVs.
2.Supports advanced driver assistance and autonomous driving: seamless integration with ADAS and L2–L4 autonomous driving systems, enhancing product value and market competitiveness.
3.Reduces weight and optimizes structure: eliminates mechanical steering columns and linkages, simplifying the structure with fewer components, reducing weight, optimizing powertrain layout, and improving overall vehicle efficiency and driving range.
4.Enhanced safety and redundancy: dual-channel control and redundant power and sensor design ensure safety and compliance even in extreme conditions.
